4 – Kings Levada (Levada do Rei)

The Kings Levada starts at the Water Treatment Plant in São Jorge. We walk all the way to the source of the Levada, which is known as Ribeiro Bonito (Beautiful Brook). At this wonderful location, we rest for a bit and return the same way.

On the first part of the trail, we walk through an exotic forest composed of some introduced flora specimens. This initial section of the path presents us with panoramic views of São Jorge and Santana farmlands. Here we can also observe some herbs and medicinal plants that are still used as natural remedies.

On the second part of the walk, the Levada takes us to the interior of the island. Here we find one of the best-preserved areas of the Laurissilva Forest, Madeira’s native forest, which is rich in natural biodiversity.

The water is abundant in this area, there is a small waterfall that cascades down onto the trail. We may walk through it or behind it.

The permanent presence of clear water in this location intensifies the abundant life forms and allows a great diversity of species to thrive. We can observe the majestic centenary Madeira laurels, the laurel trees, the Madeira mahogany, the tiny birds like the firecrest and the chaffinch.

When we reach Ribeiro Bonito we have the sensation of having gone back to the time of the discovery of the island. Here nature remains almost the same as it was many years ago.

While we have a small break, we can enjoy the sounds of nature, the water running down the stream, and the birds singing.

Couple Traveller

Just returned from a week’s holiday and managed to fit in 5 trips with Happy Tours! We went on the 25 Fontes Levada walk, Kings Levada walk, The East tour, The West Tour and Nuns Valley. The guide for every single one was was knowledgeable and professional, we were picked up on time and the views/scenery were outstanding! We were a little worried about the Levada walks as we had read reviews that there were steep drops and tunnels but the guides were brilliant at setting a comfortable pace and helping with any tricky bits. They gave us lots of local knowledge on the flora and fauna on the way and went above and beyond in making sure our trip was perfect Overall a brilliant trip and we would definitely recommend this company! We hope to return soon to do some more of the Levada walks!
