Discover the Nuns Valley Island Tour

The Nuns Valley tour is the perfect trip to begin to know Madeira. On this half-day trip, you will see wonderful landscapes from the viewpoints and visit some of the most beautiful villages.

The first stop of this tour is at Pico dos Barcelos viewpoint, located at 355 meters above sea level. From this splendid location, you will experience a 360o view of Funchal. In the background, you can spot the Desertas Islands.

Afterward, we drive to the “heart” of the island. The Eira do Serrado viewpoint stands at an elevation of 1095 meters. From here you have a stunning view from Curral das Freiras (Nuns Valley), that lies below, and the majestic mountain of the central massif that surrounds it.

The next stop is the picturesque village of Curral das Freiras (Nuns Valley). It is situated in a deep valley, which resembles the crater of a volcano. This is one of the few places on the island that is not visible from the sea.

The name derives from the fact that around 1590, the nuns from Santa Clara’s Convent in Funchal fled to this remote place when the Lutheran French pirates invaded and sacked Funchal. They found this to be the perfect shelter to escape the attacks.

Lastly, we make a short break in Câmara de Lobos. The beautiful fishing village is known for its magnificent bay with colourful fishing boats. Here you may try some local drinks, like poncha or Madeira Wine.

My husband and I did the half-day trip to Nun’s Valley, €15 each and well worth it. Our driver/guide Hugo was very knowledgeable about the island and was also quite amusing. We were picked up promptly from our hotel and returned there at the end of the tour. Firstly we stopped at Pico dos Barcelos which gives fantastic views over Funchal’s harbour and shoreline, then up into the mountains to Eira do Serrado, the viewpoint over Nuns’ Valley – absolutely stunning! We then went down into the Valley where we stopped for a quick photo opportunity and a quick drink. We were then meant to go to a Madeira wine tasting but it was closed so our driver took us to Camara de Lobos, which is a little fishing town, particularly beautiful at this time as it was being decorated ready for the annual Fish Festival. All in all a great tour would highly recommend.

We have used Happy Tours every time we go to Madeira and they never disappoint. Very professional and friendly service. Again we did the Nuns Valley tour which is only a 3 hour tour, but it’s just simply breathtaking.

We first booked a half-day trip to the valley of the nuns. The guide picked us up from our hotel, very convenient. Apart from the valley itself, we stopped on a hill overlooking Funchal (as well as Ronaldo’s village), and later on a mountain overlooking the valley. Bring wind-resistant pants and a jacket, it is very windy and cold up there! The guide was very pleasant and told us so much about these points of interest.

We took a tour of Nun’s Valley with Madeira Happy Tours. After some confusion about the pick-up area (turned out that it was right where the ship docked), we were off to Nun’s Valley and many views of the island on the way. It was interesting to see some of the interior parts of the island. This tour lasted for approximately 3 hours, we were a small group and it was fairly inexpensive especially compared to similar offerings from the ship. Then we had time in the afternoon to visit the downtown area on our own. Highly recommend!
