The Nuns Valley tour is the perfect trip to begin to know Madeira. On this half-day trip, you will see wonderful landscapes from the viewpoints and visit some of the most beautiful villages.
The first stop of this tour is at Pico dos Barcelos viewpoint, located at 355 meters above sea level. From this splendid location, you will experience a 360o view of Funchal. In the background, you can spot the Desertas Islands.
Afterward, we drive to the “heart” of the island. The Eira do Serrado viewpoint stands at an elevation of 1095 meters. From here you have a stunning view from Curral das Freiras (Nuns Valley), that lies below, and the majestic mountain of the central massif that surrounds it.
The next stop is the picturesque village of Curral das Freiras (Nuns Valley). It is situated in a deep valley, which resembles the crater of a volcano. This is one of the few places on the island that is not visible from the sea.
The name derives from the fact that around 1590, the nuns from Santa Clara’s Convent in Funchal fled to this remote place when the Lutheran French pirates invaded and sacked Funchal. They found this to be the perfect shelter to escape the attacks.
Lastly, we make a short break in Câmara de Lobos. The beautiful fishing village is known for its magnificent bay with colourful fishing boats. Here you may try some local drinks, like poncha or Madeira Wine.
