Madeira Island Levada Walks

Travel Agency and Tour Operator - RNAVT 11884

What is a Levada?

A Levada is a traditional irrigation channel or aqueduct unique to the island of Madeira. Originally constructed starting in the 16th century, these narrow stone or concrete canals were designed to carry water from the rainfall-heavy and humid regions of the north and the mountain plateaus to the drier agricultural sun-drenched fields and villages in the south.

Today, these channels are world-famous for the maintenance paths that run alongside them. These paths have been transformed into an extensive network of walking trails, offering hikers a relatively flat and accessible way to explore the island's lush Laurissilva forests, dramatic mountains, and hidden waterfalls.
