We begin the Levada do Norte walk just after Cabo Girão, in Câmara de Lobos municipally, afterwards we pass through the valley of Quinta Grande and Campanário, municipally of Ribeira Brava.
This is one of the oldest levadas of Madeira Island and it took many years to build. It stretches for more than 60 km, but on our journey, we only walk 6 km of its extension. The path is easy and flat.
Like most Levada walks, this one was built in order to bring water from the North of the island to the South, with the purpose of irrigating the agricultural fields.
Along the way, we see the typical “Poios”, organized and maintained agricultural land. We can identify several types of vegetable plantations and fruit trees. Other types of trees we can see are the eucalyptus and mimosa trees.
Throughout the walk, we admire the breathtaking landscapes of the villages and their houses, the valley of Ribeira Brava, and the Atlantic Ocean.
