14 – Levada da Referta

Levada da Referta is an easy and flat Levada walk, therefore, it does not present significant difficulties.

This pleasant walk is located in Porto da Cruz which is on the north side of Madeira Island. We begin our trip at a place called Referta and walk towards Castelejo.

On this walk, we will observe the local crops grown for self-sustenance. We will be able to see a variety of vegetable plantations and also some fruit trees.

Also visible are the sugarcane plantations, which was and still is very important for the parish. Sugarcane has been cultivated here since the beginning of the settlement. The canes are transformed into Aguardente (white Rum), which is then used in the typical drink known as Poncha.

Towards the end of the walk, we can also observe some vineyards, responsible for the production of the famous American wine.

Along the way, we have breathtaking views of the north sea, Porto da Cruz and the spectacular rock formation Penha d’Águia. This imposing rock rises from the earth at 590 meters high.
