The Levada Nova Walk is a half-day walk in Tabúa, Ribeira Brava municipality, and walks west in the direction of Ponta do Sol. This is an easy and flat Levada walk, however, it is not recommended for people with vertigo. There are some parts with high cliffs and no protection. Along the way, we will admire fantastic views over Tabúa valley, Ribeira Brava, and Ponta do Sol.

Levada Nova (New Levada), got its name due to the fact that water only started flowing along the canal in 1962.

On the way, we can see agricultural land carefully cultivated by its owners. Sugarcane plantations are also a constant presence on this walk. In Madeira, the cultivation of sugarcane started in Funchal in the year 1425 and it expanded throughout the South coast in the 15th and 16th centuries.

Nowadays, sugarcane is still used for the production of the famous cane rum (aguardente), which is then used to make the well-known drink, Poncha. Sugarcane is also used to produce sugarcane honey, used to make traditional cakes and biscuits, a true gastronomic heritage.

The fact that this walk is located on the South coast, where the weather is better, makes this a suitable walk all year round.
