The Levada Vale Serra D’Água is a half-day Levada walk located in the valley of Serra d’Água parish, which is part of the municipality of Ribeira Brava. This is an easy and flat walk, nonetheless, in some areas, the path is a bit narrow with steep drops. It is not recommended for people with vertigo.
The name of the watercourse we follow is Levada do Norte, which is one of the longest (more than 60 km) and most important levadas of the island. It was built in sections over the years in order to bring the much-needed water to the South of the island from the North.
Along the way, we can admire beautiful views of the South coast, Encumeada, Ribeira Brava, and Campanário.
We can also observe the typical Madeiran agricultural terraces with a diversity of products. This organized method of plantation contrasts with the vast Eucalyptus forest, which we also encounter. In the Spring, a beautiful variety of flowers are also present along the Levada.
This pleasant walk ends at the very small village, Eira do Mourão, where the population lived basically isolated for years. In 2003 a road was built in order to improve the quality of life of the locals, before then, the only way in and out was through a walking path.
